Morgoth is Lord of the Rings' original villain, "there from the first" (The Silmarillion). Sauron gets all the credit, featuring as the main antagonist of The Lord of the Rings, the masterwork of British fantasy pioneer J.R.R. Tolkien. This novel, released in three parts between 1954 and 1955, informed the world-famous movie trilogy by Peter Jackson. But Morgoth and his followers were often expanded upon in The Silmarillion.
