WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for The Bear season 3.The Bear season 3 sheds more light on the staff at the titular restaurant, including budding pastry chef Marcus (Lionel Boyce), whose mom was very sick. In The Bear season 1, Marcus was sleeping at the restaurant and dedicating much of his time to learning everything about desserts. The opening episode of The Bear season 2 reveals that Marcus has been juggling his studies and his work with caring for his sick mother, who is lying unconscious in a hospital bed. The overriding theme of The Bear is about struggling to maintain a work-life balance, and while it's a subtle undercurrent, Marcus and his mom are very much tied to the same thematic concerns.
