The first Pirates of the Caribbean film was surprising when it was announced, as it was based off a theme park ride. However, 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a massive success upon its release. Part of the reason The Curse of the Black Pearl was so successful was because it featured the debut of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, a reckless but extremely charismatic pirate.
