Long before The Pitt premiered as one of the most intense medical dramas of the 21ist century, ER was making history on NBC. Nowadays, it easily ranks as one of the must-watch TV masterpieces of the '90s. With each episode reaching tens of millions of viewers during the show's heyday, a massive audience was tuned in when two versions of the decade's riskiest episode aired on the same night in 1997. ER produced a live episode twice, in just a matter of hours, for two time zones. Even now, nearly 30 years later, live episodes of scripted dramas are rare.
