In 1982, E.T. was among the earliest feature films Spielberg directed, and easily one of his most successful. However, it was the first time Spielberg had been working on a family film, since he previously directed titles such as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Raiders of the Lost Ark in the 7 years prior.
