Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Charlie Kaufman’s Adaptation popularized a self-aware, self-effacing approach to cringe comedy in which the writer depicted themselves, in all their shame and self-loathing, as the butt of the joke. Author Jonathan Ames took that approach to his cult comedy classic Bored to Death at HBO. Bored to Death revolves around a struggling Brooklyn-based writer named Jonathan Ames, and he’s a fictionalized version of the show’s creator, except the TV version of Ames moonlights as an unlicensed private detective.
