Although Michael Corleone ends up replacing The Godfathers Vito Corleone as the mafia familys godfather before The Godfather Part II, Vito wasnt short of potential candidates. Vitos Consigliere, Tom Hagen, could never have taken on the role as he wasnt a blood relative of the godfather, but Michaels older brother Fredo seemingly had a claim to the job. The Godfathers ending sees Vito pass over Fredo in favor of Michael.
